Ladywell streetscape improvements are nearing completion and the main roads are all open again. It is immediately apparent how much more space there is for pedestrians and it seems that traffic speeds are a lot lower due to the narrowed carriageways and raised table accesses to the side roads. From a cyclistâs point of view these reduced traffic speeds are a major benefit along with the soon to be smooth riding surface! A major element in the improvements was the provision of a safe cycle route across Ladywell Road on National Cycle Network route 21 (photo shows Toucan in process of installation and shared route to Malyons Road). Although not the optimal solution we were campaigning for, involving footway sharing over Ladywell railway bridge, the provision of shared pavement usage from Algernon Road to the new Toucan crossing and then on to Malyons Road is a satisfactory compromise.
