Vigil for Ellie: Bermondsey Square Wednesday 16th December 6pm

  • by

The family of Ellie Carey, killed on her bike last week, is organising a vigil via twitter and Facebook to take place on Wednesday at 6pm, location Bermondsey Square. I have the greatest admiration for the families of people like Ellie, Brian Dorling, Eilidh Cairns and Alex McVity, amongst others, who have worked, and are still working, so hard to make our roads safer for others.  They have made me… Read More »Vigil for Ellie: Bermondsey Square Wednesday 16th December 6pm

Mixing it with the cars November 7

  • by

Five or so I think at Cutty Sark Gardens for the 7:15 off, not counting one who emerged from the foot tunnel off to the East Croydon pick-up. By the time we left Forest Hill I think we were ten, another joined in Sydenham and by the time we hit East Croydon no-one was quite sure how many – 35? Maybe more. They came from Southwark, Lewisham, Bromley, north of… Read More »Mixing it with the cars November 7

Pluckley Circular Ride 30th October

  • by

Saturday dawned fair and bright, and with that came a large group of cyclists: Field Marshall Hughes, Captain Fergar, Alan, Eleanor, Gareth, Helmut, Ian, Jane, Katie, Martin, Miranda, Philip, Suleiman. Pluckley, as we all surely know is Britain’s most haunted village so it seemed like a good opportunity to imbibe the spirits at the start of the ride, and thus to imbibe them again at the end in the Black… Read More »Pluckley Circular Ride 30th October

Secret London Gardens 14th August

  • by

Bill Owen’s Secret London Gardens ride took us from Walworth to Vauxhall via St Giles, Islington, Barbican, Kings Cross, Hyde Park,  Holland Park & Chelsea The individual gardens stunned us with their luxurious variety of colour and planting  – we could have happily spent an hour in each of them. Most it seems were loving cared for by local community groups and it would be probably true to say that… Read More »Secret London Gardens 14th August

Why so few girls on the team?

  • by

Well it’s over.  The London Cycling Challenge, that is. And I have just presented our own school prizes to those children on our team who cycled the most miles. Including a child in the reception class who cycled over 50 miles in those four weeks.  Not bad for a four year old! It also looks like we have won our school category as well.  My only regret as I presented… Read More »Why so few girls on the team?

70 flat (almost) Kentish miles

  • by

I had planned to meet up with Oliver’s ride which, according to the Greenwich website, was heading out to Maidstone East on a train from London Bridge.  I picked up the train on the last leg of that journey from Bromley South.  I thought Oliver’s ride would pile on at Otford, but not one single bike got on the train there. So I headed out from Maidstone alone. Luckily I… Read More »70 flat (almost) Kentish miles

London Cycle Challenge

I’m a primary school teacher, for those of you who didn’t already know. The school in which I teach is situated in what could be considered one of the most cycle unfriendly parts of the planet.  Some enterprising 60’s town planner managed to squeeze a tower block estate cheek to concrete cheek with the A2 Old Kent Rd. Thus was born the Tustin Estate https://www.facebook.com/pages/Tustin-Estate/214033508616258?sk=info with Pilgrims Way Primary School right… Read More »London Cycle Challenge

Peaks of Lewisham 2011

  • by

Weather not as glorious as the last two years but decent in what’s been a rather damp Bike Week. It kept dry for us and the views were clear. A good bunch at Cutty Sark Gardens was mostly made up of newbies which was nice, including one who’d come all the way from Brighton. Along the way, we picked up two folk hanging around for the evening on top of… Read More »Peaks of Lewisham 2011

A tale of TfL, traffic flow, an elephant and a ruined castle

  • by

Forgive the slightly whimsical heading but I’m trying to cheer myself up. Us Lewisham Cyclists have been asking TfL quite a few questions lately and the answers we’ve been getting have been a wee bit depressing. One answer keeps on cropping up again and again. In answer to a query about why all the pedestrian crossings on the Old and New Kent Rd seem to have greatly increased their waiting… Read More »A tale of TfL, traffic flow, an elephant and a ruined castle

Conservative Assembly Members Prevent Vote on 20mph for Blackfriars Bridge

  • by

Ok, not strictly a purely Lewisham issue, but I’m betting many of us use this bridge frequently.  I know I do.  And, earlier this month, we urged you to sign the LCC motion calling for the 20 mph limit to be retained.  And, as a Londoner, I’ve always felt that the bridges and the river belong to us all. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always feel like that on our beautiful river… Read More »Conservative Assembly Members Prevent Vote on 20mph for Blackfriars Bridge
