A couple of months ago, Lewisham Cyclists had an online meeting with Councillor Chris Best, the current Deputy Mayor of Lewisham Council, Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care and Ward Councillor for Sydenham.
It was the first time we had met, as well as being the first time we had met the Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care. Considering this took place whilst the pandemic was still very much in the forefront of our daily lives, we felt it necessary to look further at the potential role active travel could play in terms of improving health outcomes in the borough. We spoke about a wide range of issues and were pleased to hear her support for school streets.
Councillor Best provided us with the following statement.
”School Streets make it safer and easier for children to walk, scoot or cycle to school. Lewisham Council is creating School Streets by restricting traffic on roads outside schools at drop-off and pick-up times.
School Streets help children be more active as part of their daily routine, and are a step towards protecting children’s health on their journey to school.
By taking action to protect children from air pollution and road danger on their school journey, we can end the damaging impact of unnecessary car journeys, and create quieter streets with cleaner air.”
