Surrey Hills Winter Edition December 2013

  • by

I have been a bit remiss in completing ride reports recently…but having been told at the Greenwich Christmas Quiz that at least a few people enjoy them, I will start again. I rode to Clapham Junction under blue skies streaked with thin threads of pure white cloud, a beautiful clear winter light flooding the Common. A great 6 miles to start the day I was expecting at least half a… Read More »Surrey Hills Winter Edition December 2013

Boris’s Solution: Take off those headphones and complete this survey

  • by

Although we feel that everyone is quite clear about what is wrong with some of the major pieces of cycling infrastructure in our city, and believe that cycling and other sustainable transport organisations have been explaining for some time now what needs to be done, Boris, as usual has his own ideas.  So, folks, whip off those headphones because apparently you iPod carrying wheelers are the scourge of the city’s… Read More »Boris’s Solution: Take off those headphones and complete this survey

Wheels For Wellbeing: A Cycling Good News Story

  • by

A  good news story featuring cycling.  Very welcome this week, especially and a really good one to remind us just how enjoyable and positive an activity cycling can be.  I met a group of cyclists that reminded me again of some of the many reasons I love cycling. I was responding to an email request for volunteers to learn how to pilot tandems to enable people with visual impairments to… Read More »Wheels For Wellbeing: A Cycling Good News Story

Transforming City Streets with a Paintbrush

  • by

Whenever you meet with TfL’s highly trained and intelligent road engineers to discuss cycling infrastructure, they will often baffle you with their references to traffic modelling systems that show them just how impossible it is to take the kind of road space from cars for other road users that we ask for.  They will quote surveys and projections of future traffic flow needs at you that can leave a simple… Read More »Transforming City Streets with a Paintbrush

Winter Ride Season Beginning!

  • by

Don’t forget to keep checking on our rides calendar,  even through the winter months. Year on year, Lewisham Cyclists keeps riding as many of those 52 weeks as we can.  The only thing that stops is unsafe conditions, like ice, and that doesn’t happen too often in this corner of the country.  You will generally find at least one ride every weekend on our calendar throughout the winter, and often… Read More »Winter Ride Season Beginning!

Lewisham Gateway:

  • by

This development has a long and troubled history.   As far as cyclists are concerned, the massive roundabout which has dominated the area since it was installed in the early 1990’s, will not be missed.  Only a few hardened risk takers will attempt a circuit by bike and it’s no more popular with motorists.  For pedestrians, it turned a fairly human sized simple T junction, with pubs, cinemas and shops in… Read More »Lewisham Gateway:

Over The Hills and Not So Far Away (Farthing Down into Surrey and Kent Ride)

  • by

Seven of us headed up out of Coulsdon on to the lovely Farthing Down. The weather looked good but we had all brought waterproofs, prepared for the forecast showers. At this point, it looked as though the forecast was wrong. Beautiful blue skies, bright sunshine giving us terrific views all round. On to Chaldon and then a fast descent down to Spring Bottom Lane, and then further south to cross… Read More »Over The Hills and Not So Far Away (Farthing Down into Surrey and Kent Ride)

Ladywell Downe and Fickleshole

  • by

Nine of us at Ladywell Fields cafe – only just opening as we leave, so no opportunity for a quick coffee. Beautiful sunny day and few cars as we cruised to Hayes via Bellingham and the lovely section of Greenway along the Ravensbourne River. Soon out into the country the main ‘traffic’ being returning early rising club cyclists. Steady climbing up to Downe and a well deserved stop for teas… Read More »Ladywell Downe and Fickleshole
